Children Situation’s in the Jungle of Peru
The jungle area of Peru is one of the poorest regions of a poor country. In the largest region, Loreto, approximately 2/3 of the people fall below the poverty line. More than 46 % of the total population is under 18 years of age. The poorest families need to send their kids out onto the streets to earn money any way they can in order to get food on the table. For these families feeding themselves is more important than obtaining an education. At the present Peru’s economy is growing and there are opportunities for those people who are educated. In Peru elementary education is mandatory, and the government offers free tuition in the public schools in the country, but the families must provide uniforms and school materials such as paper and pencils. If the families can’t afford to supply their children with these items they can’t go to school. If we can provide the opportunity, many of these children and their families will continue their education.
